Dave Maloney Encourages Would-Be Clock Appraisers to Comply With USPAP

The National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors recently invited Dave Maloney (third from left), author of the highly-acclaimed how-to book for appraisers, "Appraising Personal Property: Principles and Methodology," and of the "Complete Online Course for Personal Property Appraisers (Featuring USPAP)," to address the first-ever NAWCC Clock Appraisal Course held at NAWCC headquarters in Columbia, PA.

During the course, professionals and novices alike were introduced to the identification of clock types and key clock characteristics and components; the role of construction and materials in the proper identification of clocks; basic understanding of clock conservation, restoration, refinishing, and repairs, and the subsequent impact these factors have on value. An overview of the evolution of clock types, appropriate terminology, and criteria for making value judgments based on comparative market analysis was also covered.

"But this is a clock "appraisal" course," said instructor Joe Cohen, SFNAWCC, (third from right) emphasizing the operative word "appraisal." "Knowing about clocks is important to the appraiser, but knowing the principles, theory, methodology and standards, including USPAP, that underlie the practice of appraising is just as important. That is why we invited Dave Maloney to address the class - he knows what he's talking about," he continued.

Earlier, Cohen had announced that the NAWCC had adopted Maloney's "Appraising Personal Property: Principles and Methodology" for use in the course. "We are pleased to make use of Dave Maloney's appraisal book," Cohen had said. "It is the only comprehensive, up-to-date, well-organized and fully-indexed text book available for the personal property appraiser, and our students will benefit greatly from its use," he continued.
